Report Says AI-Assisted Assessment Nearly Prompted Action Against Chinese Ship

CNN, citing multiple unnamed sources familiar with the episode, reported that an AI-assisted intelligence error nearly led to a U.S. military operation against a Chinese vessel in the Middle East during the war with Iran.

According to CNN's sources, an intelligence report circulated through the U.S. military this spring alleged that the ship was carrying components connected to a nuclear weapons program. Armed personnel were reportedly preparing to board the vessel, with military aircraft already in the air, before officials examined the intelligence more closely.

The reported chain of events began when an analyst queried a chatbot about intelligence concerning the ship's manifest. CNN reported that the chatbot combined open-source intelligence with secret signals intelligence in government holdings and arrived at an erroneous conclusion about the cargo. AI was then reportedly used again to turn those findings into a standard military intelligence report, which was disseminated through military channels.

Reported Court Filings Put Publisher Traffic at the Center of the AI Dispute

The New York Times’ copyright lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft has brought renewed attention to what AI-driven answers could mean for the publishers whose work helps inform them.

According to newly unredacted filings in the case, a Microsoft executive privately called AI scraping “the largest theft of labor in human history.” The filings also cite Microsoft’s own data showing its Copilot answer engine cut click-through rates to the Times’ site by as much as 93% compared with traditional Bing search — a decline Microsoft’s own internal analysis warned would undercut the publishers supplying the content those tools rely on.
