The best HR advice comes from people who’ve been in the trenches.
That’s what this newsletter delivers.
I Hate it Here is your insider’s guide to surviving and thriving in HR, from someone who’s been there. It’s not about theory or buzzwords — it’s about practical, real-world advice for navigating everything from tricky managers to messy policies.
Every newsletter is written by Hebba Youssef — a Chief People Officer who’s seen it all and is here to share what actually works (and what doesn’t). We’re talking real talk, real strategies, and real support — all with a side of humor to keep you sane.
Because HR shouldn’t feel like a thankless job. And you shouldn’t feel alone in it.
I’m tired.
Not “I need a vacation” tired.
I mean deep, cellular tired.
My stomach is almost always in pain. Headaches show up like clockwork. I go to the doctor… and I’m told everything looks normal.
“It’s nothing.”
But it’s not nothing.
I clench my teeth so hard at night I’m afraid to sleep without my night guard.
Even unconscious, my body doesn’t let go.
Stress has a hold on me.
And the truth is — I can’t remember a time when it didn’t.
A while back, when I was teaching in Japan, I asked one of my students:
“What do you worry about?”
She looked genuinely confused.
“I don’t worry about anything.”
Not defensive. Not pretending. Just surprised I would even ask.
As if to say:
Why would anyone worry?
That moment stuck with me.
Because for me, worry isn’t optional. It’s automatic.
It wakes up before I do. And apparently, it doesn’t sleep either.
I don’t have a clean answer for this one.
I just know I don’t want to live clenched forever.
